Martin was a coal miner. He and Agnes had a strong commitment to education and were fond of saying, "A good education is no weight to carry". This commitment was reflected in the lives of their children - James (Jimmy), Norah, Stella, Catherine (dec 2yrs), Anne, Catherine, Martin, John, Shiela.

Martin emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1949 following Kitty, Anne and John.
John subsequently emigrated to Ontario, Canada in the 1960s.

An account of incident was reported by fellow passenger, American war correspondent Margaret Bourke-White in Life magazine February 1943 - Women in Lifeboats.
