The web has just begun to have an impact on our lives. As fascinated as we are with it today, we’re still seeing it in its early forms… My belief is that not only will the web be as fundamental to society as electrification but that it will be subject to many of the same diffusion and absorption dynamics as that earlier medium.

Free and Creative Commons Images for Schools

  • Compfight image search
    An image search engine that searches Flickr for Creative Commons or other images as specified. Free. Excellent for students.

  • Flickrstorm
    One of the very early image search services. It searches Flickr and has the advantage of being able to hold selected images in tray while searching. Free.

  • Pictures – Search the web for images
    An image search service with more than 3,000,000,000 pictures. Thumbnail size only but great variety and quality. Free for education and non-commercial use.

  • WorldImages – California State University IMAGE Project
    The internationally recognized WorldImages database provides access to the California State University IMAGE Project. It has just been selected by the Library of Congress for inclusion in its historic collection of Internet materials. It contains approximately 80,000 images, is global in coverage and includes all areas of visual imagery.

  • Animation Factory
    Includes free animated gifs, ppt templates etc. Great source of design ideas.

  • ScienceImage – CSIRO
    Scienceimage is an image library specialising in science and nature images. It is presented by CSIRO, Australia’s major science research organisation.

  • School Clip Art for Teachers and Kids
    Free clipart for educational purposes.

  • Pics4Learning | Free photos for education
    A copyright-friendly image library for teachers and students. The Pics4Learning collection consists of thousands of images that have been donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers. Unlike many Internet sites, permission has been granted for teachers and students to use all of the images donated to the Pics4Learning collection

  • Trove – images
    The Trove website is focused on Australia and Australian – historical data. If you are researching in the fields of the social sciences, literature, local or family history, or need inspiration for your school assignment, then this is the tool for you. It includes genuine Australian photos, recordings, newspapers, historical records.

    Images are free.   • FreeFoto.com – Free Pictures
    These images are free for use in a number of different ways – online use, education etc. Important to read the ‘rules for use’.

  • Flickr: The Commons
    The key goals of The Commons on Flickr are to firstly show you hidden treasures in the world’s public photography archives, and secondly to show how your input and knowledge can help make these collections even richer. The collection draws on resources available from numerous international libraries and museums and organisations such as NASA and the Australian War Memorial. Free. Institutions who participate agree to a “no known copyright restrictions” on the content they share.

  • Dreamstime – Download Free Stock Images and Photos
    Many free images in addition of commercial. Suitable for school.

  • Old Book Illustrations: pictures scanned from old books
    This site is dedicated to providing you with a wide range of illustrations scanned from old books. Most of these vintage pictures are originally wood engravings or woodcuts, fewer are etchings or metal engravings; visitors looking for nineteenth century or victorian clipart might just find it here. You are welcome to use our pictures in your school or educational projects, as well as in your artwork or in your scrapbook; you can also use them to make CD sleeves, banners or any part of a website. According to the copyright laws in many countries, all illustrations in our galleries belong to the public domain and as such, they are free to use for personal or commercial purpose.
