The web has just begun to have an impact on our lives. As fascinated as we are with it today, we’re still seeing it in its early forms… My belief is that not only will the web be as fundamental to society as electrification but that it will be subject to many of the same diffusion and absorption dynamics as that earlier medium.

Web's oldest search directory founded in 1994.

Yahoo Directory
Information on the Web organised by subject.  Has SafeSearch to filter out explicit, adult-oriented content. 

Google Directory
The web organised by topic into categories. SafeSearch option, good language tools.

Open Directory Project
A public project - largest human-edited directory on the Web.

Search for People

Pipl - Searches the 'deep web' to find people.  See your own digital footprint.

NetTrace - A range of places to search for people and their contact details.

Search Engines for Students

Yahoo! Kids - Formerly Yahooligans.  Quite a distracting site for students but good resource with supervision.

KidsClick - Designed by librarians, resources are arranged in categories. Also search alphabetically or by Dewey classification.

Visual Search Engines

Quintura Kids - Based on Yahoo! Kids, excellent for juniors.  Search result in tag cloud and list of sites option makes it easy to define exact search term for more exact results.

Search Cube - Presents web search results in a unique, three-dimensional cube interface. It shows previews of up to ninety-six websites, videos and images. Stunning. 

Spezify - A different look in search results. Presents resources from social web and traditional.

Google Wonderwheel - Search topic, then click Wonderwheel (left side menu) to see your result displayed as a concept map.
